Cafés, taxis, markets and shops across Russia show an SBP QR code at checkout. Here is how to pay one from a crypto balance: the steps, what the rate looks like and what happens after you confirm.
What SBP is and why a QR code can be paid with crypto
SBP is Russia's Faster Payments System, a national network for instant bank-to-bank transfers in rubles. Many shops, cafés, taxis, markets and online stores show an SBP QR code at checkout: you scan it in a banking app and the money moves between the two bank accounts.
That is the catch for anyone holding crypto. The code only accepts a ruble transfer from a bank, so you can't send USDT into it directly. TeleCard puts a verified P2P merchant in the middle. The merchant pays the same QR code in rubles from their own bank account, and you give them the equivalent in crypto from your TeleCard balance.
The shop sees an ordinary SBP payment and never touches crypto. For you it means no Russian bank card or account: you need a Telegram account and crypto on your balance. And because a real person is in the chain, every step has a status and a time frame.
Who this is for
- Travellers and expats who hold crypto and want to pay in Russia like a local.
- Remote workers and freelancers whose income is in USDT or BTC.
- Anyone who wants to pay an ordinary SBP QR code (café, taxi, services, market stall or website) and see the rate and the total before confirming.
Step by step: paying an SBP QR code with crypto
- Open TeleCard. Launch the Mini App from the bot @itelecard_bot or open app.telecard.top in your browser. The app opens only with your passcode or biometrics.
- Top up your balance. Pick an asset and a network, copy the address from the app and send the transfer. The network must match on both sides; our guide to choosing a USDT network shows how. Wait until the funds are credited.
- Scan the QR code. Point the camera at the code on the terminal, the bill or the website. Scanning alone doesn't charge anything.
- Check the details. The screen shows the recipient, the ruble amount, the asset and the final debit. If the code has no amount, enter it yourself.
- Confirm the payment. The rate is locked for 30 seconds. Confirm with your PIN or biometrics. If the time runs out, the app shows refreshed terms and you confirm them again.
- Wait for “completed”. The order goes to merchants, one of them pays the QR code, and the result appears in your history and in a bot message.
You can pay with USDT, BTC, ETH or Gram, depending on the asset and network you choose. The full list is on the Wallet page.
What happens to your order after you confirm
Right after you confirm, the amount is frozen on your balance and the order lands in the merchants' feed. From there it moves through a few stages.
| Stage | What happens | Default time frame |
|---|---|---|
| Finding a merchant | The order waits for a merchant to pick it up. The amount stays frozen on your balance. | up to 15 minutes |
| Merchant pays | A merchant took the order and pays the QR code in rubles from their account. If they decline or run out of time, the order goes back to the search. | 3 minutes to pay |
| Completed | The merchant confirmed the payment. The status shows in your history, the bot sends a message, and cashback is credited. | once the merchant has paid |
While the order is still looking for a merchant you can cancel it, and the frozen funds return to your balance at once. If no merchant is found in time, the order is cancelled and the funds come back as well.
Dynamic and static QR codes
Dynamic QR codes
You'll usually meet these at a restaurant table or an online checkout. The amount is already encoded in the code and the app shows it straight away. Compare it with the bill before you confirm.
Static QR codes
A sticker on a market stall or a small shop's counter often carries only the recipient, and you type the amount yourself. That's where mistakes happen, so double-check the recipient, the ruble amount and the final debit. Fixing a typo before you confirm is easy; once you confirm, the order goes out to merchants.
What it costs, and the payment limits
There is no separate fee on top of a QR payment. By default the payment rate is 4% below the market rate: 3% service fee plus 1% merchant margin. After the order is completed, 1% of the payment amount comes back as cashback in USDT · TRC20, so the net difference from the market rate is about 3% by default.
A single payment ranges from ₽10 to ₽100,000 by default, and the monthly total is ₽300,000. These values come from service settings, and the app shows the exact numbers for your payment before you confirm. For a worked example, read Rate, fee and total.
Before you confirm: a quick checklist
- The recipient matches the shop or service you are paying.
- The ruble amount matches the bill.
- You understand the asset, the network and the final debit, and your balance covers it.
- The quote is still valid: the timer hasn't hit zero.
- You are confirming this purchase, not repeating a previous one.
Your PIN and biometrics protect the confirmation on your device, but they don't check the recipient for you. That check is yours.
If something looks wrong
Open your history and follow the status of this exact order. Don't make a second payment just because the cashier hasn't seen the transfer yet: a repeat action becomes a separate purchase. Keep the order number, the time and the amount, and compare any mismatch with the shop using our guide on checking a QR payment and contacting support.
Support is available in the in-app chat and in the bot @itelecard_bot. They need the details of the operation, not access to your account, so never share your PIN or Telegram login codes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay an SBP QR code with USDT directly?
The code itself only accepts rubles through SBP. In TeleCard a verified P2P merchant makes the ruble payment, and crypto is debited from your balance.
Do I need a Russian bank account or card?
No. You pay from your TeleCard crypto balance, and the merchant pays the shop in rubles from their own bank account.
Which cryptocurrencies can I pay with?
USDT, BTC, ETH or Gram, depending on the asset and network you choose. Networks and minimum amounts are listed on the Wallet page.
Is the 30 seconds timer the time the whole payment takes?
No. It is the time your rate is locked for confirmation. The merchant's payment and the final status are later steps with their own time frames.
What should I do if the payment didn't go through?
Check the status in your history and don't pay again until the result of the first attempt is clear. If the order is still looking for a merchant, you can cancel it and the funds return to your balance.
